CV and Research topics

Carolina Gabarró was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1974. She received the B. Eng. degree in Telecommunications Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Ocean Science from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, in 1998 and 2004, respectively.

From 1997 to 1999, she was with the European Space Research and Technology Centre, European Space Agency, in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, where she worked on ocean-color remote sensing (MERIS on ENVISAT mission).

Since 2000, she has been with the Physical Oceanography Department, Instituto de Ciencias del Mar, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Barcelona, Spain. In February 2013 she became a permanent staff researcher at the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar, CSIC. She is currently a Member of the SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre, Barcelona.

She is since 2000 full time dedicated to the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. The inversion algorithm and L-band brightness temperature modelling have been major issues in her investigation activities. Since 2005, she has been part of the Expert Support Laboratories team selected by ESA to define the algorithms and models to be used in the official SMOS operational processing chain to retrieve salinity from SMOS. She is now studying the capability of SMOS and other L-band radiometers to measure several characteristics of the Arctic ice (ice thickness and melt ponds). Her research interest includes microwave remote sensing of the ocean and of the Cryosphere.

She has 35 publications in CSI journals and more than 50 contributions to international conferences. She has participated in 12 public research projects.
