Oceanographer
After an undergraduate degree in Physics (Universidad Simón Bolívar, Venezuela), I got Masters in Physical Oceanography (University College of North Wales, Great Britain) and Oceanography (Oregon State University, USA) and worked in offshore research for the Venezuelan oil industry during six years. In 1988 I went to the United States and in 1992 I got a PhD in Oceanography under the advice of Prof. Gabriel T. Csanady (Old Dominion University). I moved to the Canary Islands where I lectured in the undergraduate degree program in Marine Sciences and the graduate program of Oceanography at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC, 1992-2003) and became the Dean of the School of Marine Sciences at this university (1998-2002). In 2002-2003 I was a visiting fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in 2003 I moved to the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) located in Barcelona, the largest oceanographic centre in Spain belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
I regularly lecture in several graduate programs granted by Spanish universities, acting during 2005-2010 as the ICM's coordinator for the joint ICM-ULPGC graduate program in Oceanography. I'm also one of the directors of the Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia, and the academic coordinator for the formative program of ICM's specialized course offer (www.barcelona-ocean.com), where I regularly teach courses on Scientific writing, Ocean dynamics: steady circulation, and Ocean dynamics: propagating anomalies. I have been the director of 21 MSc and 14 PhD theses, and have been member of the dissertation committe in some 50 PhD thesis. I have also had an extensive activity organizing scientific meetings and all sorts of disseminating events, addressed to students from the early school to the university level and to the general public. I have participated in numerous oceanographic cruises, in eight of them as Chief Scientist (R/Vs García del Cid, Hespérides and Sarmiento de Gamboa).
Former national coordinator in Earth Sciences for the Spanish National Evaluation Agency (2006-2010), also founding member for both the International Laboratory on Global Change (LINC-Global, CSIC-Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and the Catalan Observatory for the Oceans (ICM and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya). Research Professor at ICM, currently member of the Natural Resources Committee for CSIC, member of the Advising Committee for LINC-Global, Head of the Physical and Technological Oceanography Department and Coordinator for the Research Group on Physical and Technological Oceanography (consolidated group 2014 SGR 1166).
Lines of research
Mixing processes and frontal systems, eastern and western boundary currents, mediterranean outflow, coastal upwelling, mesoscale features, boundary layers, process modeling, glacial-interglacial changes, physical-biological interactions, ocean physiology.
