I apply methods from the statistical theory of turbulence to quantify the small-scale turbulence in the near-surface winds over the oceans measured from space by orbiting satellites. The results help to validate wind measurements, identify differences between instruments and processing methods. The scientific aim is to correlate the statistics with sea surface temperatures and their gradients, passage of mesoscales weather phenomena (such as mesoscales convective systems, tropical and extratropical cyclones), cold air outbreaks, etc.


Previous research topics included:

* Experimental work on multistability in Taylor-Couette flow (the flow between rotating cylinders);
* Co-developer of the Broomhead-King method to reconstruct phase portraits from observational time series;
* Application of catastrophe theory to the interpretation of bistable chaos in a nonlinear electronic oscillator (van der Pol-Duffing oscillator);
* Studies of chaotic Lagrangian transport in three-dimensional steady fluid flows.
